As shown in the figure on the left, adhering to ASME B31.1 Power Boilers and Piping standards, these intermittent drain valves are typically deployed in Zone 2, seamlessly integrated into boiler or boiler piping. In addition to these, continuous drain valves, traps, and safety valves are also widely utilized.
According to §122.1.4 of ASME B31.1 Power Boilers and Piping, the piping is generally equipped with a dual valve series, comprising a Y-type intermittent drain valve and an emergency stop valve.

The intermittent drain valve is engineered with a lever-type rapid discharge mechanism, facilitating swift opening and closing actions. When the valve is activated, the sediment, dirt, and any other particulates settled at the base of the boiler can be expeditiously expelled in under 3 seconds. Extending this time could lead to excessive boiler water discharge, culminating in substantial resource wastage. The flow pathway is designed to be as linear as possible, similar to a straight pipeline.

The emergency stop valve is implemented to ensure an absolute shut-off of the pipeline, preventing resource wastage in the event that the preceding intermittent drain valve encounters a malfunction.
